The Allman Brothers Band è un gruppo musicale southern rock formato a Macon, Georgia nel 1969. Fondata originariamente intorno ai due fratelli Duane e Gregg Allman la line up originale è costretta a cambiare a causa dell’improvvisa morte del chitarrista Duane Allman,
causata da un incidente stradale alla fine del 1971. Famosi per le loro
esibizioni dal vivo, vengono considerati una delle migliori live band:
il loro disco più famoso e apprezzato rimane At Fillmore East, storica performance del marzo del 1971. In seguito alla morte di Duane Allman il chitarrista Dickey Betts,
gia seconda chitarra, lo sostituisce alla chitarra solista: con questa
nuova formazione incomincia ad arrivare anche il successo commerciale,
grazie ad album più leggeri, spensierati e di più facile ascolto, ma
artisticamente meno rilevanti. Una delle caratteristiche principali del
gruppo è quella di basare la sessione ritmica sull’utilizzo di due
batterie, che eseguono la stessa partitura ma sfasata di una battuta.

At Fillmore East is a double live album by The Allman Brothers Band, universally regarded as their breakthrough success. Released in July of 1971, At Fillmore East is hailed as one of the greatest live recordings in the history of rock music. It was number 49 among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Album of All Time , At Filmore East remains among the top-selling albums in the band’s catalogue.
Recorded at the Fillmore East music club, the storied rock venue in New York City, on Friday and Saturday March 12, 1971–March 13, 1971, it showcased the band’s mixture of blues, Southern rock and jazz. The cover of Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues” which opens the set showcases Duane Allman‘s slide guitar work in open E Tuning. “Whipping Post” became the standard for a long, epic jam that never lost interest (opening in 11/8 time, unusual territory for a rock band), while the ethereal-to-furious “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed“, with its harmonized melody, Latin feel and burning drive invited comparisons with John Coltrane (especially Duane’s solo-ending pull-offs, a direct nod to the jazz saxophonist).
The album was produced by Tom Dowd, who condensed the running time of various songs, occasionally even merging multiple performances onto one track. At Fillmore East peaked at #13 on Billboard‘s Pop Albums chart.
Several songs recorded during the same set of shows, including “One
Way Out”, “Trouble No More”, and the memorable “Mountain Jam”, were
later released on Eat a Peach, the latter spanning two sides of the double album.
In 2003 the TV network VH1 named At Fillmore East the 59th greatest album of all time. It was also ranked #49 by Rolling Stone on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in the same year. In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. The song “Whipping Post” is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.
None of the pictures for the cover of the band were actually taken
at the Fillmore East. The photographer Jim Marshall took the cover shot
at the band’s headquarters in Macon, Georgia, where the band formed in 1969.
Normally the band hated being photographed; the cover of The Fillmore Concerts
shows them displaying terminal boredom. However, during the session,
Duane spotted a dealer friend, raced over and grabbed a bag of
contraband, then returned to his seat, discreetly clutching the stash
in his lap. This cracked up all the members, resulting in a memorable
image.
The back cover shows their road crew gathered in the same spot with 16 oz. cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Their expressions clarify their thoughts about the brand.

Quando si parla di musica ognuno di noi ha i propri gusti e le proprie
preferenze che dipendono da molti fattori, ma ci sono dei rari dischi
che esulano da tutto questo; sono opere monumentali per bellezza e
importanza. Capolavori assoluti riconosciuti all’unanimità. Tra questi
pochissimi album ,che non dovrebbero mancare in ogni collezione rock
che si rispetti, c’è sicuramente “At Fillmore East” della ABB.
Questo è forse, per molti senza forse, il più grande doppio (inteso
come due LP) live di tutti i tempi. L’essenza del vero concerto rock è
tutta qui dentro, ci sono passione, sudore, improvvisazione, tecnica,
grinta e genio allo stato puro. Per decenni questo disco è stato il
metro di paragone con cui doveva confrontarsi ogni live album (assieme
a Live Dead) e ben pochi sono riusciti a reggere al confronto.
L’importanza di questo live è enorme per diverse ragioni: è stato uno
dei primissimi doppi dischi dal vivo, inaugurando la miglior stagione
di sempre per ciò che riguarda i live album. Il suo grande successo ha
spinto tutte le band migliori del momento a considerare il doppio live
come una prova di maturità. Esso ci da inoltre la possibilità,purtroppo
unica, di sentire il grandissimo Duane Allman nella sua versione
migliore. La prima edizione del disco conteneva 7 tracce di quel mitico
concerto che lanciò la ABB alla conquista del mondo e fece conoscere il
southern rock al grande pubblico.
