LE 4 STORIE ALL’ INTERNO :
TOO LATE FOR LOVE / Troppo tardi per amare (da PERSONAL LOVE # 25 , 1953 )
Frank Frazetta pays tribute to pin-up queen Betty Page, designing the female lead in her image. Falling in love with her married boss, a secretary proceeds to seduce him away from his adoring wife. The characters are splendidly drawn, particularly the women. Faces are not only attractive but have emotional depth and feeling. Frazetta also presents a perfect contrast between the stereotypical vamp and the girl next door.
THE WRONG ROAD / La strada sbagliata (da PERSONAL LOVE # 27 , 1953 )
A country girl moves to the city but pines for her former life and boyfriend. Set mostly in a small fishing village, Frank Frazetta takes great care in establishing the setting. Sails, masts and boats appropriately fill many of the backgrounds. These in turn enhance the colorful characters, drawn with expressiveness and individuality. Frazetta handles the Pygmalion-like change from country girl to sophisticated urbanite with ease and grace.
EMPTY HEART / Senza cuore (da PERSONAL LOVE # 28 , 1953 )
An actress falls for her handsome co-star, who responds with a cold disinterest. Frank Frazetta delivers yet another dazzling piece of work on the series, conveying the complex emotional facets of the romance genre. More open panels are employed, increasing depth and interest. His interiors are more contemporary, populated with decorative sculptures. As usual, Frazetta’s faces and figure drawings are stunning.
UNTAMED LOVE / Un amore selvaggio (da PERSONAL LOVE # 32 , 1954 )
Accompanying her fiancé on an African safari, a woman becomes attracted to a seasoned, masculine hunter employed as their guide. Frank Frazetta uses the exotic locale as an excuse to illustrate the jungle’s magnificent scenery and animals. The first panel, with its charging lion and figures frozen from fear, is an astonishing start to the story. Each panel is lovingly rendered, sometimes enhanced by primitive motifs in the captions. Like many pages, the nighttime camp scenes on page 3 is displays a masterful division of light and shadow. Heavily detailed and perfectly executed, this is Frazetta’s finest comic book work.
