La pubblicazione delle
storie di Batman da parte di Mondadori non segue rigorosamente l’ ordine
cronologico, ma è in ordine sparso, abbastanza frammentata e a random,
in una confusione caotica e poco giustificabile pur con l’ attenuante
che all’ epoca le storie non erano caratterizzate da una continuity
referenziale e vincolante ; in questo numero

Shortly after this story Batman and the Justice League fight Headmaster
Mind in Justice League of America #69.
Synopsis
Hired by the ganglords of Gotham to put Batman
and Robin out of action, Mr. Esper, alias “Brainwash”, lures the two heroes
to a bank robbery where he can implant a subliminal device beneath the
Batmobile. Once the heroes return to the Batcave, they are induced
to see it as transformed into an African jungle, with wild animals threatening
them. The same sight awaits them when they ascend to Wayne Manor.
But Batman realizes that the setting is wrong, as an African elephant would
not be in the same locale as an Asian tiger. They discover the subliminal
image-inducer, realize that it was part of a plot to drive them both mad,
and realize Mr. Esper was behind the plot. They capture Esper and
his gang trying to crack the vault of the Gotham National Bank and defeat
their foes, using earplugs to rid them of the subliminal stimuli.

La serie di Batman della
Mondadori raggiunse l’apice del successo in concomitanza con il
telefilm del Pipistrello che aveva come protagonista l’attore Adam West.
Questa
collana, oggi sempre più ricercata dai collezionisti, è rimasta nel
cuore degli appassionati pur durando 81 numeri, pochi se paragonati ai
574 Albi del Falco degli anni precedenti.
Tra storie illustrate da Bob Kane, Shelley Moldoff, Jerry Robinson, Joe Giella (…e come abbiamo visto, dal nostro Tarquinio anche se apocrifo) di tanto in tanto apparivano le tavole firmate da Paul e Peter Montague, il cui esotico e quasi francofono nome celava l’identità dei fratelli Montecchi, seri professionisti del fumetto che contribuirono al successo de Il Monello negli anni ’70 con la serie Paris Jour (1975) con il protagonista Pierre Laval ispirato al volto di Paul Newman e testi di Angelo Saccarello.
Le storie di Batman realizzate dal duo italiano non sfiguravano affatto vicino a quelle dei colleghi d’oltreoceano, anzi.
Il lato investigativo era privilegiato, la presenza di Robin limitata, anticipando addirittura uno stile che per il Cavaliere Oscuro americano era ancora di là da venire.
I Montecchi produssero
diverse storie (tra quelle da noi reperite : Batman Mondadori nn. 4,
11, 20, 23, 33, 53, 58 e 74) ad oggi, purtroppo, mai ristampate.

Synopsis
The city of Plainview changes its name to Batmantown in an effort to
attract business. Batman and Robin arrive soon afterward for a visit,
but Batman worries that the new name will attract criminals as well.
