Synopsis

Don Blake is walking through the rain, when a police officer pulls up
and tells him that he needs to get in touch with Thor, that the
Commissioner wants to see him. When Thor arrives, he meets Bennet
Barlow, Damocles’ brother. Bennet tells Thor their history. Meanwhile,
Damocles oversees the final construction of his cobalt cannon. And in a
prison, a mysterious figure is broken out by a monstrous inhuman
creature. Bennet is leading Thor to his old home in hope of finding a
clue to Damocles’ current whereabouts. But Damocles is waiting with his
completed cobalt cannon, and blasts Thor, then flies away. Bennet
brings Thor back around, and when Thor mentions that Damocles stole
synthetic cobalt for the cannon, Bennet tells Thor that it is unstable
and if it explodes could take New York with it. They find Damocles and
crew robbing a bank, as Damocles is about to fire on Thor, Bennet picks
up a gun and shoots Damocles killing him. Thor uses Mjolnir to
transport the cannon out to space, where it explodes harmlessly.

Synopsis

Two joggers find Captain America floating unconscious in the water.
He comes to in their home and discovers his face is own and that he has
no memory of recent events. He returns to Avengers Mansion where Iron
Man points out that his false face is a synthetic
skin disguise. Wasp tells Cap he met Al Avision last night, but Cap
knows no one by that name. Following every lead possible, Cap eventually
discovers that he’s been poisoned. Trying a different tactic, Cap goes
through the Avengers phone records and finds his answer. Cap contacts
Gen. Fist to tell him that he and Ken were discovered in their mission
to stop the Madbomb component smuggling operation, and that Ken must
have been tortured and killed. Cap races toward the scheduled Madbomb
convoy in time to engage Tarantula and Senor Muerte. Cap quickly defeats
the villains and Gen. Fist arrives to secure the Madbomb components.

Notes

• In this issue Ken Astor masquerades as Al Avison. Al Avison was a golden age Captain America artist.

• This is a fill-in story and does not allude to any of Captain America’s conflict with The Corporation or his Search for Steve Rogers.

Synopsis

Continued from last issue….

Having snapped free of the brainwashing that
the other X-Men have been subjected to, Wolverine breaks free as Beast
is captured and brought to the X-Men’s old foe Mesmero who then turns
his mutant hypnosis on the Beast. Wolverine meanwhile changes into his
costume and seeks out Jean’s trailer. There he confronts “Miz Destiny”
and “Slim” to try and snap Jean out of Mesmero’s mind altering. Easily
knocking out Cyclops he tries to reason with Jean, but when she refuses
to remember who she is he begins to slap her around until she gets angry
and unleashes the power of the Phoenix on him, causing her to remember
who she is. Jean then uses her powers to free the other X-Men. Beast,
meanwhile manages to resist Mesmero’s hypnosis and is about to attack
the mutant hypnotist when he is blasted from behind by some unseen foe.

When the X-Men storm past Mesmero’s minions and enter his trailer
they order his surrender, but just as soon as they enter he collapses
on the floor unconscious. They are not alone in the trailer however, as
Magneto appears and faces them, read to give them his final revenge.
