PREMESSA: LA SUPERIORITA’ DELLA MUSICA SU VINILE E’ ANCOR OGGI SANCITA, NOTORIA ED EVIDENTE. NON TANTO DA UN PUNTO DI VISTA DI RESA, QUALITA’ E PULIZIA DEL SUONO, TANTOMENO DA QUELLO DEL RIMPIANTO RETROSPETTIVO E NOSTALGICO , MA SOPRATTUTTO DA QUELLO PIU’ PALPABILE ED INOPPUGNABILE DELL’ ESSENZA, DELL’ ANIMA E DELLA SUBLIMAZIONE CREATIVA. IL DISCO IN VINILE HA PULSAZIONE ARTISTICA, PASSIONE ARMONICA E SPLENDORE GRAFICO , E’ PIACEVOLE DA OSSERVARE E DA TENERE IN MANO, RISPLENDE, PROFUMA E VIBRA DI VITA, DI EMOZIONE E  DI SENSIBILITA’. E’ TUTTO QUELLO CHE NON E’ E NON POTRA’ MAI ESSERE IL CD, CHE AL CONTRARIO E’ SOLO UN OGGETTO MERAMENTE COMMERCIALE, POVERO, ARIDO, CINICO, STERILE ED ORWELLIANO,  UNA DEGENERAZIONE INDUSTRIALE SCHIZOFRENICA E NECROFILA, LA DESOLANTE SOLUZIONE FINALE DELL’ AVIDITA’ DEL MERCATO E DELL’ ARROGANZA DEI DISCOGRAFICI .

This Band is totaly awesome. If you enjoy Power Trio’s then this is a
Band for any true Music Fan. I own Three of their Albums, and believe me
they are tuly worth checking out. If you have not done so already. The
Tail Gators call their Music “Swamp Rock” and once you take a listening
to their Southern Blend of Music, then you will understand why they call
their Music by that name. They are from Austin, Texas.

Don Leady the leader of the band is the singer, songwriter, guitarist,
accordianist and producer with a vision. He puts together an audio gumbo
of Gulf Coast styles blended with rock seasonings. A native of Cool
Valley, Missouri, Don Leady continues to experiment with the guitar to
find new techniques and sounds. It certainly doesn’t stop with the
guitar, he’s gone into fiddle, steel guitar, and most recently the
accordian. His education came from masters of the art, Chet Atkins, Les
Paul and later BB King, because their music was readily available. He
heard the Ventures and Duane Eddy a bit further down the line and loved
their style. “Have Guitar, Will Travel” by Duane Eddy freaked him out
totally, it was amazing. He caught Joe Maphis and the Collins Kids on
the TV show, Ranch Party, and Joe Maphis made a huge impression on him.
Joe Maphis became one of Don Leady’s idols. Hearing Joe Maphis play the
boogie woogie guitar and thinking to himself that the guy was picking
the guitar ten times faster than Duane Eddy, Don Leady was star-struck.
The Tailgators began in 1984 and continued into 2000, with a charismatic
style of music that is very contagious. Don Leady, Jean-Jacques (JJ)
Barrera and Chico Oropeza, are the Tailgators that are cookin’ up the
tunes on their 1996 release, It’s A Hog Groove. Billy Gibbons, of ZZ
Top, calls the trio from Austin Texas his favorite American band. The
trio is one that should not be missed at a live venue, if there are any
tickets left, they generally sell out fast. Some of the other names the
Tailgators have been rumored to use in and around the Austin scene are,
Zydeco Loco and Gators Del Norte. Whatever name they use, the end
product is the same, It’s A Hog Groove.

The Tailgators

It all started in Austin, Texas, in 1985. Don Leady, a co-founding
member of the LeRoi Brothers, decided to venture out on his own to
pursue his own style — a combination of original Swamp pop and
Louisiana-style rock ‘n’ roll — which later he would name Swamp Rock.
Gary “Mud Cat” Smith joined him on drums after playing with then 14-year
old Charlie Sexton (the Eager Beaver Boys). Jack Moore, one of Don’s
old friends, volunteered to play bass temporarily to get the band
started. Just two months later, Keith Ferguson walked into a club on
Sixth Street in Austin where the Tailgators were playing and said “Hey,
I’ll play with you guys”. Right then and there, Don told him “You’re
hired!” Keith had just left the Fabulous Thunderbirds and had always
been one of Don’s heroes from the ’70s. The original Tailgators trio
was formed. The Tailgators’ debut album, Swamp Rock, was recorded a
couple of months later.

The Tailgators recorded several albums over the years in the styles of
Swamp rock to surf. One song, Tailshaker, received a Grammy nomination
for Best Rock Instrumental in the late ’80s. (Just prior to that time,
Don and Keith had been playing with another Austin band, Big Guitars
From Texas, which also received a Grammy nomination.) Over the years,
the Tailgators constantly toured all over the world. After several
years, Keith decided to quit touring and leave the band. JJ Barrera
then replaced Keith and has been the trio’s bassist ever since. Chico
Oropeza has been rounding out the current trio of the Tailgators on
drums for the past several years.

Unfortunately and sadly for the music world, our dear friend Keith
departed this world in 1997. Thankfully we had the opportunity to share
a few good years together.

Later in 2008, we lost an honorary member of the Tailgators, Danny Roy
Young, who made a guest appearance on It’s a Hog Groove and who played
with us on many occasions in Austin.
