Synopsis

News has gone out that District Attorney Blake Tower had cleared
Spider-Man of any wrongdoing in the deaths of George Stacy and Norman
Osborn, much to the chagrin of J. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man himself is
the last person to learn of this, and it comes as a shock and a
surprise.

However, not everyone is pleased with Spider-Man’s new found
fame, and so a mysterious foe from Spider-Man’s past has hired the
Chameleon (who has new shape-shifting technology) to ruin Spider-Man’s
reputation. Spider-Man “saves” the Chameleon who was posing as a
suicidal man, as Spider-Man is making his exit the police tell him that
D.A. Tower wants to see him. After visiting Aunt May in the hospital,
her doctor tells Peter that if he cannot afford to keep her in the
hospital, she will have to go to an old age home. Later, at his
apartment, Peter is visited by Betty Brant who has decided to leave Ned
Leads for good, and the two spend the whole night up talking.

Realizing that he’s running late to meet with D.A. Tower, Peter
shoos Betty out of her apartment and swings to Tower’s office where he
learns the good news much to his surprise and joy. When he’s met by the
press, he tells them that he’ll have an official press conference in
Central Park later.

Speaking with the media later, Spider-Man is attacked by the
Chameleon who has come to Spider-Man disguised as an old woman, dropping
the disguise only long enough for people to think that Spider-Man and
old woman unprovoked. This brings great joy to J. Jonah Jameson who is
watching the telecast from home. However, Spider-Man manages to capture
the Chameleon and remove his hologram inducing belt and makes him
confess. Spider-Man is cleared of attacking an old woman and the crowd
carries him away cheering, much to Jameson’s horror.

Jameson isn’t the only one who has it in for the Wall-Crawler
though, as the mystery man who hired the Chameleon vows to destroy
Spider-Man soon enough.

Synopsis

Iron Man is engaged in a standoff with a rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agent
named Buck Richlen aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Richlen orders
Iron Man to take his own life or else he will kill Nick Fury, whose body
lies at Richlen’s feet. Iron Man uses one of his power pods to generate
a concentrated electromagnetic charge which blows up a ceiling
projector in the conference room. While Richlen is temporarily
distracted by the blast, Iron Man rushes forward and knocks Richlen back
with a solid punch.

Suddenly, the room explodes in a hail of bullets originating from
outside the Helicarrier. It only takes him seconds to realize that the
Helicarrier has drifted into Soviet air space and that the gunfire is
coming from a squadron of Russian M-21 fighter jets. As Nick Fury begins
to awaken, Iron Man flies outside to intercept the jets. Fury calls
down to the engine room and angrily inquires as to why they are above
the Soviet Union.

Iron Man evades being struck by Soviet ICBMs and plows into the
oncoming fighters. He swoops down into a village and tears the steeple
off a nearby church. Hurling it, he manages to offset the trajectory of
the remaining missiles.

Unfortunately, the Helicarrier is now coasting towards a mountain
range and there is not enough time to alter their course to avoid a
collision. Iron Man races back and braces himself beneath the massive
ship. Channeling all of his armor’s power into his boot jets, he gives
the Helicarrier just enough extra push to clear the mountain range with
minimal structural damage.

With the danger passed, Iron Man boards the Helicarrier. He meets
with Nick Fury in the conference room just as he is placing Buck
Richlen under arrest. He provides confirmation that Richlen and his
cronies were acting on their own when they hired Spymaster to
assassinate Tony Stark and that none of their actions were ever
sanctioned by S.H.I.E.L.D.

A short while later, Fury drops Tony Stark off at the Stark
International facility in Paris, France. After meeting with his French
operations manager Yvette Avril, Tony goes to his office to go over the
data he collected from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s computer banks. He is horrified to
discover that although Richlen’s group were acting against orders, they
were in fact furthering an official S.H.I.E.L.D. initiative to buy out
Stark International. Furious at such a seeming betrayal, Tony telephones
Nick Fury. Fury apologizes, but stands by his actions, citing that the
security of the nation requires the sort of weaponry that only Stark
International can provide. If Tony will not sell them the weapons
technology willingly, then S.H.I.E.L.D. has little recourse but to buy
the company out from under him. In a fit of rage, Tony smashes the view
screen monitor and storms out of the office.

Synopsis

In the early hours in the morning the Hulk wanders into the town of
Gilbert, California. He passes a by a local bar, patron Fred Sloan is
tossed out by the bar’s owner. Confusing the bartender with a soldier,
the Hulk attacks the man. Sloan goes back into the bar and tells people
to stop messing with him or his friend will deal with them. The sight of
the Hulk sends all the patrons of the bar fleeing into the night. When
the Hulk tries to wander off, Fred convinces the Hulk that they are
friends and offers to let the brute stay the night at his house.

The following day at Gamma Base, the staff greets the arrivals of
Senator Eugene Stivak and Senator Andrew Hawk. Hawk is unimpressed with
the way that Doc Samson has been running Gamma Base since General Ross
had his nervous breakdown. Although Hawk has taken a hard line on
shaking things up, Stivak seems more agreeable and willing to work with
Samson. During a meeting with Samson, SHIELD officer Clay Quartermain,
and Karla Sofen, they discuss the future of Gamma Base. Samson admits
that he hasn’t done well running the facility so far, but states that he
never wanted the job to begin with. During the discussion, Stivak uses
key phrases that tip Sofen off that he is a member of the Corporation,
the same organization that she works for. She wonders what is going on
and what to do.

Meanwhile, it’s daytime in California and the Hulk has woken up
in the home of Fred Sloan. He is drawn into the kitchen by smell of
cooking. There he puts a fright into Fred’s girlfriend, her shrieks wake
Fred up. Sloan tries to convince her that the Hulk is safe but the
woman flees. Soon the authorities are on their way and when Fred hears
their sirens wailing, he convinces the Hulk to load up into his van and
they flee the scene.
