Synopsis
The Kingpin has Spider-Man hooked up to a
machine with his seemingly dead son, Richard Fisk. The Kingpin explains
of his sons “death” during his brief time running a branch of Hydra
(and ultimately duped by the Red Skull.) He explains that the device
he’s using — the Vita-Drain Device — to drain Spider-Man of his
vitality and put it into his comatose son. The process is a success and
Richard Fisk is revived, leaving Spider-Man in a severely weakened
state.
Spider-Man is then dumped in the streets to die, however the
wall-crawler manages to make his way back to his apartment where he
changes back into Peter Parker. When Glory comes knocking, she notices
that Peter doesn’t look well and puts him in bed then rushes off to see a
doctor. Peter gets up and leaves. He changes into Spider-Man and pays a
visit to Curt Connors. After an examination, Connors uses his enervator
device to restore Spider-Man. The recharge also causes a small
explosion which catches Connors, however he appears all right. However,
the measure is temporary, and so Connors equips Spider-Man with a device
that will reverse the effects of the Vita-Drain.
Spider-Man tracks down the Kingpin and his family as at the city
docks. There he uses the device given to him by Connors to take back his
stolen life force back from Richard Fisk. This leads to a battle
between Spider-Man and the Kingpin across the docks. Their fight ends
when the scaffold they are fighting on falls apart, sending both men
into the water. Only Spider-Man surfaces, who believes the Kingpin to be
dead. The Kingpin’s wife Vanessa, decides to let Spider-Man go free,
because in spite of the fact that he may be responsible for killing her
husband, the wall-crawler is responsible for bringing Richard back to
life.

Synopsis
Following his adventure in Scotland, Bruce Banner manages to get
cheap fare back to America aboard a the RMS Black Wraith provided that
he stay below deck and keep a low profile. However, Banner decides to go
up to the deck and think about his current plight. This angers the
crew, who are very strict on their rules for Banner’s passage. Banner
soon realizes why: The crew of this vessel are illegally dumping
radioactive waste into the ocean. Furious at being discovered, the crew
attacks Banner prompting him to transform into the Hulk once more. He
easily over powers them and smashes the ship, causing it to sink. As the
crew gets to life boats, the Hulk jumps into the ocean and swims away.
At Hulkbuster Base, Leonard Samson prepares the base for the
eventual capture of Bruce Banner/the Hulk so that they can use him to
restore Glenn Talbot’s mind. To this end he is running a test on the
Gammatron device however, it reaches critical mass. Pushing General
Ross, Betty Talbot and Clay Quartermain to safety, Samson is too late to
protect himself when the device explodes and bombards him with gamma
radiation. Instead of killing him, the exposure causes him to mutate
back into his gamma ray powered form, heralding the rebirth of Doc
Samson.
The Hulk meanwhile has managed to swim back to the shores of
Manhattan where he is spotted and attacked by police, he destroys their
weapons before bounding off into the city. With reports of the Hulk’s
return to America, they decide to send the empowered Samson out to try
and capture the Hulk personally. Travelling to New York aboard a SHIELD
robot helicopter, Samson orders Hulk to surrender, however the Hulk
refuses and smashes the remote controlled device. This distracts the
Hulk long enough for Samson to get close enough to strike him.
The Hulk and Samson then engage in battle across the city,
however the Hulk gains the upper hand and easily defeats Samson in
battle, knocking him into the middle of a nearby sand lot where children
are playing baseball. As the Hulk bounds away, Samson pulls himself up
and demands to capture the Hulk if it’s the last thing he does.

- John Romita’s touch-up art to Herb Trimpe’s art is revealed in the letters page of Incredible Hulk #197. As art director, Romita’s touch-ups to interior art and covers was a common practice at the time.

Synopsis
Continued from last issue…
“Why don’t we just plug him
here?” a henchman implores. “Silence, oaf!” is the Jester’s response.
“Don’t dare argue with greatness.”
Daredevil is after swept through a mouth of
spiky teeth, comes up against armed toy soldiers and nearly falls
through trapdoors. DD’s heightened senses and some inventive uses of
the billy club (which the Jester was stupidly foolish not to take off
our hero before he entered the maze) means that he remains equal to all
tricks.
A very fine conclusion to the
Jester storyline, with DD
going on TV news to explain what has happened whilst Foggy, Heather and
Matt watch the interview.
Notes
- The final segment of the Jester’s plot against New York City. This story has developed as early as Daredevil #124 when the Jester began his smear campaign against Foggy Nelson.
