Synopsis

At their next meeting, the Avengers decide they need to find the Hulk before he causes more trouble. Iron Man uses his image projector device to communicate with the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and the X-Men to ask if they have spotted him, but he has no luck. Thor comes up with the smart idea of asking Rick Jones to help find the Hulk. They contact him and Rick sets out into the desert to an area where he could be.

A short while later, Rick discovers the Hulk and leads him to a
cave they had used in the past as a refuge. There, Rick operates a
machine that transforms the Hulk back into Bruce Banner. While asleep,
stressful thoughts cause Banner to revert to his Hulk-state and escape.
Rick Jones contacts the Avengers, alerting them to the situation and
they travel to the desert to stop him getting out of hand. After a brief
battle, the Hulk escapes onto a passing train and with the help of an
empty train carriage, some industrial cable, and a couple of bags of
flour, manages to elude the team. After laying low, he reaches the sea
and is eventually taken onto a ship on the brink of exhaustion.

Under the sea, Namor the Sub-Mariner
watches the scene. After the Hulk leaves the ship, the Sub-Mariner
meets him on a small island. After a short fight, Namor suggests they
team up and fight the humans together, as they each bear a grudge
against humanity. They form an uneasy alliance, each untrusting of the
other, and issue a challenge to the Avengers: to battle at the Rock of
Gibraltar! The villains use old World War II weaponry to attack the
Avengers, but Iron Man deflects the shells with his repulsor rays. Namor
disables Iron Man by firing an emery dust pellet at him, clogging up
the joints in his armor. Thor holds the duo at bay while the Wasp
finds a tank of oxygen, which is used to blow the dust away and bring
Iron Man back into the fight. The Avengers chase their enemies through
the tunnels. Namor plans to use an old air raid siren he has converted
into a weapon, but is caught by Giant-Man
and the battle continues. Both the Hulk and Sub-Mariner attempt to lift
Thor’s hammer but are unable to do so. At an inopportune moment, the
stress causes Hulk to change back into Banner when Namor needs his help
the most, and is forced to flee. Namor, without help from the Hulk, is
quickly outmatched and narrowly escapes into the ocean.

Notes

  • Prior to Avengers 3, Thor battled Mister Hyde in Journey into Mystery #99100 (in italian last issue and in this one).
  • Giant Man and the Wasp battled the Human Top in Tales to Astonish #5051 (in Italy in URC # 34-35).
  • In Tales of Suspense #48 (in Italy in DEVC # 32), Iron Man upgrades his armor to his Mach III model during his battle against Mister Doll. In Tales of Suspense #49 (in Italy in DEVC # 33) a misunderstanding causes him to get into a conflict with Angel from
the X-Men. The Avengers make a brief cameo appearance in that issue.
  • The Hulk, without a title of his own, last appeared in Avengers #2 (in Italy in THC # 6) in which he quit the group.
  • Namor the Sub-Mariner was last seen in Fantastic Four Annual #1 (in Italy in F4C #15),
in which he finally found the civilization of Atlantis, only to have
them all desert him following his defeat at the hands of the Fantastic
    Four.
  • Iron Man visits the Fantastic Four following the events of Fantastic Four #22 (in Italy in F4C #17) following the aftermath battle against the Mole Man. His meeting with Spider-Man occurs following the events in Amazing Spider-Man #7 (in Italy in URC #7) where Spidey has a rematch with the Vulture. And finally his meeting with the X-Men follow their battle with the Blob in X-Men #3 (in Italy in CAPC # 4-5), the favor mentioned by Iron Man during this meeting was about events that transpired in Tales of Suspense #49 (in Italy in DEVC #33).
  • The Gamma Ray Projector that Rick Jones uses to change the Hulk back into Bruce Banner was last used in Incredible Hulk #6 (in Italy in URC # 66-67).
At the time, Banner could only change back and forth between being
Banner and the Hulk by constantly bombarding himself with different
doses of Gamma Radiation. The device was triggered whenever Banner or
the Hulk stepped on a footplate in the floor.
  • Though not established yet, this is the first issue where
Banner transforms into the Hulk under high-stress levels. This would
soon become his most famous and his only way to transform into the
    green-skinned Savage Hulk.
  • For a while, extreme stress becomes the only way the
transformation between Hulk to Banner would occur. Though not confirmed
yet, in this issue, Hulk transforms back to Banner out of extreme anger
and stress, reminiscent of a future persona “Professor Hulk”.
  • Thor will later recall and relate more specific details of his individual fight with the Hulk in Journey Into Mystery #112 (in Italy in THC #15).

  • Polaris Submarine

Synopsis

As Thor
walks through the city, he is jeered at by bypassers who call the
police. Thor is unaware that he has been implicated in a bank robbery.
As the police fire on him, Thor decides the safest thing to do is to
become his alter ego Dr. Don Blake for a time. He recalls how his father
Odin has forbidden him to marry the mortal woman Jane Foster, so he
decides to ask Odin to make her immortal instead.

As Blake takes Jane out to dinner, they are interrupted by the villain Mister Hyde,
who takes them prisoner at gun point. He leaves Blake tied next to a
bomb, threatening Jane that he will kill Blake if she resist him.
Heading to the East River Naval Yard, Hyde steals a Polaris submarine.

The bound Dr. Blake finally manages to reach his cane, and transform into Thor. Thor pursues Hyde in the submarine, and Odin watches from Asgard as Thor engages Hyde in battle. When Thor drops his hammer
for a moment, Jane conceals it – fearful that even if Hyde is defeated,
Thor will still be unable to keep Blake from being blown up.

Without his hammer, Thor only has 60 seconds before he will
return to his Dr. Blake form. So the Thunder God uses his cape to create
a tornado within the sub that conceals his transformation back to Blake
and allows him to find his hammer. By the time he can transform back to
Thor, Hyde has used the tornado as cover to escape. Before Thor can go
searching for him, Jane informs him that Dr Blake is in danger. Thor has
to pretend to go rescue his alter ego to keep Jane for learning his
secret.

Suddenly Odin appears and angrily informs Thor that he will not
make Jane immortal. Her actions in hiding the hammer and allowing the
evil Hyde to escape showed that she was unworthy. Thor laments that he
may never find happiness.

Synopsis

This flashback tale of the early days of Asgard focuses on Balder the
Brave. In this story, he is brought to the court of Odin to answer for
the fact that during a recent battle against the Storm Giants, Balder
deserted his comrades. Balder explains that during combat, he saw a bird
fall from its nest, so he had left the battle to return the bird to its
mother.

Furious that Balder would abandon a battle for such a deed, Odin
orders Balder to face the test of mortal death, which Balder agrees to
take in spite of the other warriors of Asgard’s protests.

The test requires that Balder stand in front of a line of
soldiers who would attempt to kill him without his resistance. First
Odin orders Tyr, master archer of Asgard, to fire an arrow at Balder.
The unflinching Balder is saved at the last minute when a hawk swoops
out of the sky and stops the arrow from hitting Balder.

Odin orders Honir to throw a spear at Balder, which is stopped by
a sudden sprouting of vines from the ground, and again Balder does not
flinch. Then Odin orders Thor to strike down Balder with his hammer. As
Thor approaches to strike Balder down, the warrior still does not move,
prompting Odin to stop Thor.

Odin reveals that he summoned the hawk and the plant to save
Balder at the last minute of each attack to test his bravery. Having
passed Odin’s test, Odin rewards Balder with the gift of invincibility,
and has him hailed as Balder the Brave.

Synopsis

Jealous of Balder being in favor of Odin next to Thor, Loki decides
that he will kill Balder. Knowing that Odin gifted Balder with
invincibility, Loki surmises that Balder must have some sort of
weakness. He seeks out the Norn Queen in his attempt to find Balder’s
weakness.

At first the Norn Queen refuses to aid Loki, but eventually gives
into Loki’s demands and tells him that the only item in all of Asgard
that did not pledge to protect Balder was mistletoe. With this knowledge
in hand, Loki travels out and obtains a small amount of mistletoe and
has one of his slave trolls fashion it into a dart and construct a blow
gun.

The next day Loki spies Balder jousting in the combat practice
fields and waits for the right moment to strike. Balder trips in an
attempt to avoid stepping on a caterpillar and Loki uses it as an
opportunity to fire the dart at him. Just as he is about to fire the
dart, the blow gun bursts into flames in his hands. The Norn Queen
contacts Loki via her crystal ball and informs him that although
mistletoe did not pledge to protect Balder, she did, and thus thwarts
his attempt to kill Balder. Loki pledges revenge, but the Norn Queen has
her aide prepare witches’s brew against any such attempt.

Balder, meanwhile regains his feet, little knowing how close he was to losing his life.
