Quando creò tutti questi personaggi strampalati con caratteristiche improbabili e frequenti protagonisti di situazioni assurde o addirittura inverosimili , Stan Lee era abbastanza consapevole dei danni impressionanti ed irreversibili che avrebbe causato in svariate generazioni di lettori, ma non poteva immaginare che la nefasta influenza della sua insana dottrina si sarebbe col tempo spinta talmente oltre da essere foriera di siffatte e palesi sciagure fino al tracollo e al collasso completo del sistema di culturale occidentale.
Anche qui da noi in Italia il bilancio dei danni è ancora appena provvisorio e incalcolabile : secondo i dati dell’ Istat, ancora oggi i Fantastic Four sono il gruppo di quadrumani più noto, famoso ed imitato, molto più del Quartetto Cetra, dei 4+4 di nora orlandi, dei quattro cani per strada, dei quattro dell’ oca selvaggia, dei quattro spose per sette fratelli, dei quattro + quaranta gatti, dei tre moschettieri che in realtà sono poi quattro, dei quattro allegri ragazzi morti e di aldo giovanni e giacomo.
questo numero contiene tre storie complete dei Fantastici Quattro in cui il gruppo è impegnato ad affrontare un altro quartetto, quello spaventoso con la scapigliata Medusa ed altri tre mascalzoni poco gradevoli ed ancor meno raccomandabili

Synopsis
Fed up with being the “fall guy” of the group, Ben leaves the Fantastic Four and leaves New York City for Jersey, however as he sleeps in the open, he is captured by the Frightful Four. The Wizard uses a hypnosis machine to make Ben their obedient slave.
When the FF find a lead on where Ben is, they travel out to New Jersey and are soon attacked by the Frightful Four, and during the fight Thing arrives and attacks his former comrades. The Things added strength is what the Frightful Four needed to defeat the Fantastic Four, and all the members are bound by different booby-trapped restraints. With Reed glued to a wall with the Trapster’s paste, the Wizard convinces the Thing that it’s Reed’s fault that he’s a monster and convinces him to that he should kill Reed.

Synopsis
While goading the brainwashed Thing to kill his friend Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny manage to free themselves from their traps and counter attack the Frightful Four, giving Reed enough time to free himself from the Trapster’s paste. However, while fighting the Thing one on one, Ben manages to catch Reed and smash him into an urn. During the fight, Johnny is captured and Sue flees after the urn with Reed inside. The Frightful Four then brainwash Johnny and Wizard announces that now that the Torch has joined them, they’ll have no trouble disposing of the Invisible Girl! Sue frees Reed and they get a hold of a number of the Wizard’s anti-gravity discs. Using them to disorientate the other Frightful Four members, they use one to make taking Ben back to base easier. However, although the other members are caught up, the Wizard and Johnny are still free and chase after Reed, Sue and Ben. Unfortunately for the girl, Sue stumbles on a rock and before she can recover, Torch surrounds Reed, Ben and her with a wall of flame. Wizard tells Torch to rescue the Thing, but to finish off Reed and Sue. So ends one of the best FF cliffhanger endings ever, as Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl are doomed!

Synopsis
After rescuing the brainwashed Thing from the Frightful Four, Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Girl flee from the Wizard and his other seemingly brainwashed thrall, the Human Torch. When they escape in Johnny’s car, the Wizard decides to break off pursuit and free his other Frightful Four teammates, who were taken out of the fight by his own anti-gravity discs. After the Wizard and the Torch get them down, the Frightful Four realize that the Torch had deliberately hampered them whenever they tried to harm one of his former teammates.
Reed and Sue return to the Baxter Building, where the Thing begins to fight back. They quickly subdue him with knockout gas, and Reed begins the long task of trying to find a cure for the Wizard’s brainwashing process. Meanwhile, the Wizard and Medusa inspect the ID Machine, and confirm what the Wizard suspected: someone tampered with the machine during the battle, and the Human Torch has only been pretending to be under their control. They ambush the Torch and knock him out, so the Wizard can prepare the final phase of the revenge against the Fantastic Four.
At the Baxter Building, Reed has finished constructing a device that he hopes will revert Ben’s personality to normal. But when Reed activates the device it overloads and explodes. Reed rushes in to pull the control helmet from Ben’s head before he is permanently harmed, with Sue throwing a force field around him for protection. They then drag Ben into a nearby bed where they can only hope that he will awaken cured. At the Latverian Embassy, Doctor Doom inspects his hands and finds that they have healed after his last battle with the Fantastic Four. Doom is furious over such an ignominious defeat, but he has already planned a suitable revenge, as his Emotion Changer ray is complete and ready to use.
Back at the Baxter Building, the Frightful Four’s anti-grav ship lands on the roof and the villains begin infiltrating the building. Reed completes his tests and concludes that the Thing has been cured, just as the Frightful Four ambush them. The Wizard shows Reed and Sue that he has Johnny trapped outside on a massive anti-gravity disc. The Wizard then threatens to send Johnny up into space to suffocate unless the Fantastic Four surrender. When Reed tries to save Johnny, the Wizard and his cohorts show that they mean business. The Wizard then gives Richards ten seconds to surrender. However, before this time is up the Thing awakes and attacks the Wizard, rending the villain’s armor with his bare hands, destroying his anti-grav control unit. As Reed and Sue attack their foes, Johnny is able to break free from the now deactivated disc and join the fight.
As the battle rages, Medusa decides to retreat. The Torch sees her, but fails to prevent her escape in the Wizard’s anti-grav ship. With Medusa’s departure the survivors of the Frightful Four are easily subdued. But when Reed telephones the police to have them send an officer over to collect the prisoners, the officer on the phone thinks it’s a prank call. After Johnny leaves to drop off their foes with the authorities, Reed and Sue check on Ben and welcome him back to the group. Ben is surprised by this, after the hatred he displayed earlier. But Reed points out that Ben couldn’t help himself, and he is welcomed back to the team.
Notes
- The Fantastic Four’s next appearance is in Fantastic Four Annual #3 (in this italian next issue) for Reed and Sue’s wedding.
- Doctor Doom’s hands were crushed by the Thing at the end of Fantastic Four #40 (in Italy in F4C #35). Doom’s scheme for revenge plays out in Fantastic Four Annual #3 (in this italian next issue).
- What happens to Medusa after her escape is chronicled in X-Men First Class Vol 2 #15 (in Italy in 100%MARV-XM FIRST CLASS #4), where she meets the X-Men, who free her from the Wizard’s influence. She next encounters the FF in Fantastic Four #44 (in Italy in F4C #40), where it is revealed that she is a member of the Inhumans.
- After their defeat in this issue, The Frightful Four never reassemble. Individual members are seen again from time to time, but their only subsequent appearance as a group is decades later in Amazing Spider-Man #657 (in Italy in SMP #570) which recounts in flashback an untold tale of the Frightful Four’s first attempt to find a replacement for Medusa, in which the group recruits the Beetle into their ranks.
