Synopsis
After examining a strange aquatic creature given to Reed by the Coast Guard, Johnny arrives with Lady Dorma, who has come asking the FF’s help to protect Atlantis from Attuma a rogue Atlantian Warrior who is trying to usurp Namor’s rule.
Traveling to Atlantis, the FF battle Attuma’s forces.
When Namor battles Attuma in one-on-one combat, it’s Sue’s invisibility powers which help Namor turn the tide of battle to his favor.
Retreating before the battle is over because their Oxo-spray is wearing off, the FF are unable to see the conclusion of the battle where Attuma is defeated and taken prisoner. Reaching the surface the FF use Reed’s body as a life raft and wonder how they’re supposed to get home.
Notes
- The Fantastic Four previously met Lady Dorma in Fantastic Four Annual #1 (in Italy in F4C #15)
- Attuma’s origins are revealed in Dark Reign: Made Men #1 (in Italy in MARV.MONST.ED. DARK REIGN #3) and Fear Itself: The Worthy (in Italy in FEAR ITS #5 or MARV. OMN. FEAR ITS. # 1).
- Namor’s people had mostly abandoned him in Fantastic Four Annual #1 (in Italy in F4C #15), but they are suddenly back under his rule in this story. Saga of the Sub-Mariner #9 (unpublished in Italy) explains that the Atlantean people returned to their king because they came to believe that they judged him too harshly.
- Reed’s suspicions are correct as revealed in Fantastic Four: The Wedding Special (in Italy in F4P # 263), which showed that following the events of Fantastic Four Annual #1 (in Italy in F4C #15), Sue had made up her mind that she loved Reed over Namor.
- Story was later adapted into an episode of the Fantastic Four (1967 animated series) Episode 11.
- The cover image of the Sub-Mariner is a classic Kirby rendition. This image will be used for decades in marketing both the character and the company.
