serie  KA-ZAR N. 39

Synopsis

Having been called to Miami, Florida by Barbara Morse and Paul Allen,
Ka-Zar has troubles upon landing when Zabu gets loose from his cage and
tries to attack people unloading the plane. Barbara and Paul manage to
whisk Ka-Zar to safety before the secrecy of their mission is blown by
Ka-Zar being arrested. Along the way into the Everglades, Ka-Zar is told
that he was brought up from the Savage Land in order to help them find
their colleague Ted Sallis. Ted had gone missing while in the process of
creating a biochemical breakthrough, and they fear that Ellen Brandt
— who is in league with AIM might be responsible.

Their jeep is attacked by AIM soldiers, and they crash into the
nearby swamp, where Ka-Zar and Zabu save the two scientists from
alligators. Getting to land Barbara and Paul take Ka-Zar to a hospital
to meet their colleague Dr. Wilma Calvin, who is in a coma. They explain
to Ka-Zar that not long ago, while they were continuing their research
in creating a new super-soldier serum, reports of a monster lurking the
swamps spread across the area. When Barbara was held hostage by the
locals, who blamed the scientists for the monster, they were attacked by
the “Man-Thing”, and burned by the creatures touch, Dr. Calvin was also
attacked by the creature and hence why she is in a coma.

Becoming aware of that they are being watched by the very
creature they have spoken of, Ka-Zar and Zabu chase after the
muck-monster. The Man-Thing ends up falling into a pit, dug out by AIM,
and when Ka-Zar stumbles upon the AIM foot soldiers, his battle with
them is abruptly ended when he falls into the same pit as well. Ka-Zar
come around to realize that he is alone in the pit with the Man-Thing.

Notes

  • Second appearance of the Man-Thing. First in-color appearance; he made a chronologically earlier appearance in the “Behold the Man-Thing” story-arc in Marvel Comics Presents #164-167 (unpublished in Italy). His last actual appearance was in the third story in Savage Tales #1 (in Italy in CDPC #12).

Synopsis

Trapped in a pit with the Man-Thing,
Ka-Zar battles the creature and is surprised to find that the
creature’s touch does not burn him. The battle is quickly ended when the
Man-Thing is knocked out by an AIM soldier’s weapon. When Zabu free’s
himself, he attacks the AIM soldiers, and Ka-Zar soon helps his
companion defeat their attackers, forcing them to retreat.

When Barbara and Paul arrive, they help Ka-Zar pull the
muck-monster out of the pit and bring it back to their lab for
examination. Along the way, Ka-Zar deduces that the creature’s touch
didn’t burn him because he did not fear the creature. When one of the
other scientists at the lab is shot, and that Paul and Dr. Calvin have
gone missing, they catch one of the locals thinking that he’s an agent
of AIM. After some “convincing” from Zabu, the man confesses that he has
nothing to do with AIM.

Ka-Zar, Zabu and Barbara manage to track down the AIM base, while
back at the lab the Man-Thing revives and oozes through the cage
holding it prisoner. While Ka-Zar battles the AIM agents stationed
there, Barbara finds Dr. Calvin, and learns that Paul is a spy working
for AIM. Paul holds Barbara at gun-point until the Man-Thing bursts
through the wall and goes after Paul. Paul let’s go of Barbara in fear
of the Man-Thing, who grabs Paul. Paul is burned to death by the
Man-Thing’s touch. Ka-Zar manages to get himself, Zabu, Barbara and Dr.
Calvin out of the based as the Man-Thing throws a switch causing the
base to explode, seemingly destroying the Man-Thing.

Notes

The Man-Thing appears next in Adventure Into Fear # 10 (in Italy in SUPER-EROI LE GRANDI SAGHE #30)
