PREMESSA: LA SUPERIORITA’ DELLA MUSICA SU VINILE E’ ANCOR OGGI SANCITA, NOTORIA ED EVIDENTE. NON TANTO DA UN PUNTO DI VISTA DI RESA, QUALITA’ E PULIZIA DEL SUONO, TANTOMENO DA QUELLO DEL RIMPIANTO RETROSPETTIVO E NOSTALGICO , MA SOPRATTUTTO DA QUELLO PIU’ PALPABILE ED INOPPUGNABILE DELL’ ESSENZA, DELL’ ANIMA E DELLA SUBLIMAZIONE CREATIVA. IL DISCO IN VINILE HA PULSAZIONE ARTISTICA, PASSIONE ARMONICA E SPLENDORE GRAFICO , E’ PIACEVOLE DA OSSERVARE E DA TENERE IN MANO, RISPLENDE, PROFUMA E VIBRA DI VITA, DI EMOZIONE E  DI SENSIBILITA’. E’ TUTTO QUELLO CHE NON E’ E NON POTRA’ MAI ESSERE IL CD, CHE AL CONTRARIO E’ SOLO UN OGGETTO MERAMENTE COMMERCIALE, POVERO, ARIDO, CINICO, STERILE ED ORWELLIANO,  UNA DEGENERAZIONE INDUSTRIALE SCHIZOFRENICA E NECROFILA, LA DESOLANTE SOLUZIONE FINALE DELL’ AVIDITA’ DEL MERCATO E DELL’ ARROGANZA DEI DISCOGRAFICI .

The Cooper Brothers are a 70s Canadian southern rock band founded in Ottawa, Ontario, by brothers Brian Cooper and Dick Cooper and their long-time friend Terry King. Starting in 1974, the band released several singles under the production guidance of Les Emmerson (of the Canadian rock group Five Man Electrical Band,
best known for the popular 70’s anthem “Signs”). The group had some
early regional success with the tracks “Finally (With You) ” and “Miss
Lonelyhearts” under the Polydor label.

The band first gained international attention in the summer of 1978
when they signed with producer Gary Cape and then he signed the band to
a long term major contract with Capricorn Records (famous for producing several of the most popular southern-rock acts of the time including: The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie and Elvin Bishop). Over the next few years the Cooper Brothers released two albums produced by Cape under the Capricorn label, the self-titled, The Cooper Brothers and Pitfalls of the Ballroom. Both albums sold extremely well and the singles “The Dream Never Dies”, “Show Some Emotion” and “I’ll Know Her When I See Her”, all charted on The Billboard Hot 100.

Among their many critical accolades, the Cooper Brothers were voted
Best New Group in 1978, Best MOR Group in 1979 and Best Overall Group
in 1980 by Canadian Contemporary Music Programmers. In 1980, “The Dream Never Dies” also earned an A.S.C.A.P Award as one of the most performed songs on U.S radio. The song has subsequently been recorded by several other artists including Bill Anderson and Juice Newton, and was also the title theme for a feature length documentary on Canada’s National Ski team.

At the height of their career the band toured extensively throughout North America, opening for such diverse artists as: The Doobie Brothers, Black Oak Arkansas, Joe Cocker, Charlie Daniels, Atlanta Rhythm Section, McGuinn, Clark and Hillman and Seals and Crofts. In addition, the band worked with some of the most prolific musicians of the day including Chuck Leavell – the current keyboardist for The Rolling Stones – who played on the Cooper Brothers’ track “Ridin High.”

Despite their success, the band faced a dramatic transformation in
late 1980, when Capricorn Records folded. The band however, would once
again go into the studio with Cape producing but now the band was
joined by Les Emmerson of Five Man Electrical Band. One more album was
produced Learning to Live with It but with little success this
time. Les Emmerson now lending his experience and expertise, the Cooper
Brothers produced one last album – Reach for the Sky. This last album went unreleased and the band members parted ways shortly after in 1983.

In October 2006, the Cooper Brothers would reunite to release a CD collection of their most popular tracks entitled: The Best of the Cooper Brothers under the EMI
Pacemaker label. The band also performed for the first time on stage in
over twenty years, leading to renewed interest in the group and
prompting a series of live dates throughout Southern Ontario.

Lineup

Additional musicians:

Richard and Brian Cooper,
sons of an Ontario songwriter, played in various bands throughout the
late ’60s, but the two finally formed a group of their own in 1971.
They released three singles by 1974, but none charted until the band
signed with Polydor the same year and released “Finally with You.” Over
this time, guitarist
Darryl Alguire, drummer Glenn Bell, vocalist/guitarist Terry King, vocalist Charles Robertson and keyboard player Al Serwa
joined the brothers. After joining Capricorn Records in the U.S., the
Cooper Brothers released the popular singles “Rock and Roll Cowboys,”
“The Dream Never Dies,” “Show Some Emotion” and “I’ll Know Her When I
See Her.” Their albums include a self-titled work from 1978 and
Pitfalls of the Ballroom in 1979. Capricorn folded by 1980 and though the Cooper Brothers split up soon after, Brian Cooper and Terry King resumed work in the trio Cooper, King and Emmerson.

Ottawa brothers Richard and Brian Cooper started their career on the
momentum of Beatlemania and played eastern Canada in such outfits as
What The Cat Dragged In. They decided to form their own band in 1971
following Richard’s suspension from the University of Ottawa for
spending too much time on the road instead of working on his Masters’
Degree in English Literature.

By 1974 the brothers had their own band and released 3 unsuccessful
singles under the production guidance of Les Emmerson (Five Man
Electrical Band). Richard Cooper felt the material, all cover tunes,
wasn’t where they should be focusing and decided to start writing
original material. The Cooper Brothers had a minor hit with the first
release, “Finally (With You), on their new label Polydor.

As a newly expanded seven piece, manager Alan Katz landed them a
distribution deal in the US with Gary Cape’s Capricorn Records in
Macon, Georgia. With Cape also acting as producer (right up through
their final LP), by the summer of 1978 they finally had their first
legitimate hit with “Rock And Roll Cowboys”. The follow-up, “The Dream
Never Dies” became an American hit for US country singer Bill Anderson
but also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Cooper Brothers as
did “Show Some Emotion” and “I’ll Know Her When I See Her”.

With the folding of Capricorn Records in 1980 the band lost their third
album which was already completed — called ‘Reach For The Stars’ —
and floundered without a record deal.  They brought Les Emmerson
(Staccatos/Five Man Electrical Band) in as fresh blood and produced one
more album – ‘Learning To Live With It’ – on the indie label SALT,
before the brothers parted ways. The group disbanded following a long
cross-Canada tour in 1983. They did reunite for a one-off Children’s
Wish Foundation charity fundraiser at the Ottawa Civic Centre in 1986.

Brian Cooper and Terry King formed a trio of sorts featuring Les
Emmerson in 1990 called Cooper, King and Emmerson until King died of
lung cancer in 2000.
